UTME is the unification of Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) and Monotechnics, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Matriculation Examination (MPCEME) under a single matriculation examination called UTME (Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examination).
The new policy came as a result of attempts by the Federal Government and all concerned stakeholders in the education sector to solve the problems of access and the quality of entrants into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. In view of this, academic calendars and entry requirements for all tertiary institutions will be harmonised. According to JAMB, the policy was adopted to address the problem of inadequate centres and infrastructure, overstretching of existing facilities among others.
Education Tribune gathered that the minimum requirements for entry into any tertiary institution under UTME are five Ordinary Level credit passes including English Language and Mathematics where applicable. Now, candidates who do not satisfy the minimum requirements are not qualified for admission into tertiary institutions.

Alhaji Razaaq Lawal, Oyo State Zonal coordinator of the board, told Education Tribune that admissions would be sorted out in the order of preference indicated by the candidates. Once candidates have been admitted, they would not be presented for consideration in subsequent admission exercises.
‘’At the point of registration, candidates are required to make six choices of institutions as follows: two from universities; two from polytechnics; monotechnics/specialised institutions and two from colleges of education. This must be done in order of preference, beginning with the first choice (i.e. the ‘most preferred’, the ‘more preferred’ and the ‘preferred’), and all the three categories of tertiary institutions will have the same national cut-off point for admissions.
‘’Candidates are required to make their choices of institutions or courses in order of preference. All candidates will write the same examination, which is four subjects, including the Use of English, and the results of the UTME will be used for the placement of suitably qualified candidates into the three categories of tertiary institutions according to their preferences.
‘’Candidates are expected to purchase the UTME registration scratch cards from JAMB offices or authorised banks, between January and Febuary15,2010,’’he said.
However, while many welcome this development as a way of checkmating post UME others argue that it will return us to those days when students bribe their way into admission.
Do you think the introduction of UTME can solve admission problem in Nigeria?

Thanks for the information. How can I get a copy of your 2010 Admission Guide?
December 10th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
this is absolutely good without mediocry, but I just wanna ask a question, how long will the result of utme last and what score can make me qualify a University candidate.
December 14th, 2009 at 10:20 am
It is usually said that admission start from application. The experience I have had in the admission game has proven this statement tot be true. Statements like “if I had known when I was applying …” or “I never knew this before my application” is very common. At that point though they have already lost the admission. So, the point I am making is that, if you want to win the battle of admission, you have to start from application.
The ideal time to start the battle of admission is during JAMB application. Many would-be-students do not arm their selves with enough information that will guarantee their admission success. Many apply without formal orientation. Using the trial-and-error method, they fumblw their way through Universities and courses selection. The result in most cases is failure.
It is especially important that prospective candidates for 2010 JAMB UTME give special attention to application. The reason is because there are new admission policies that will shake the admission process in 2010/2011 session.
For instance, there are questions you need to answer before you apply online for the new JAMB UTME. These include: How will the new Science/Art 60:40 admission ratio affect admission? How the new admission percentage ratios of 45:35:20 for merit, catchment and educational Less Privilege State affects admission? How will the fact that there is going to be a national cut-off mark affect admission for 2010 session? How will the fact that there may be no post UME for the new JAMB UTME affect admission? Since o level credit is required for admission, is it an attempt to phase out NCE an ND? What role does catchment area policy play in admission? How does my choice of course affect my chance of admission? Will all universities accept second choice?
Your knowledge about this and many more questions may be the only thing needed to pass 2010 JAMB UTME. Before you go online and register on http://www.jambutme.org, you need to fortify yourself with the knowledge of these questions otherwise you are loosing the admission battle already.
In order to help thousands of Nigerians seeking admission for 2010/2011 session through UTME JAMB, we have pit together a comprehensive guide. it is titled “2010 Admission Guide”. This manual will address the questions above and offer solution. The manual is a must read before you go online to register for JAMB UTME at http://www.jambutme.org
There are three ways to get a copy. You will get a copy if you join project SMS Updates. Get more information about Project SMS Updates at: http://www.NigeriaUniversitiesUpdates.com/smsupdates.html

i was skeptical about getting this because i have tried 2 dell netbooks (1 was my own purchase and 1 was a gift) and hated them. however, as a necessity i needed something smaller so i gave the acer aspire one a shot and WOW, am i glad i did!! this is a great little machine and without all the dell crap on it, it is fast and easy. the keys are nicely placed, i can enlarge the print to my liking very easily and its easy to carry around with me. plus, it runs smoothly, connects to the internet quickly but BEST of all…it has windows xp installed. and let me tell you, after having a full sized laptop with vista on it for almost a year of frustration, having windows xp back is a gift from heaven!!!!

This UTME of a thing is not encouraging. With the method of admiting students,I heard that students that scored 280 and above ar goin to UNIVERSITY while 250-279 ar goin to POLYTECHNIC and student that scored 180-249 ar goin to COLLEGE OF EDUCATION.it means that in the next 10 years, the TEACHERS produced in this country wil be DULLARDS.

UTME SEEMS TO S0LVE THE PROBLEM OF IRREGULARITIES THAT EMBODIED UNIJAMB AND POLYJAMB TO SOME EXTENT, BUT IS ON THE OTHER HAND RAISING THE ITS COMPETITIVENESS WHICH INVARIABLY WILL GIVE CERTAIN FOR FOUL PLAYS BY THOSE WHO VOWED TO GET IT BY ALL MEANS (ESPECIALLY THE FINANCIALLY VIABLE ONES) TO THE DETRIMENT OF THE COMMON CITIZENS. GOD SHOULD HELP US OUT. OBINNA(08135268144).

it is true of the utme you said but i still think it will not solve university problems. check if a student tried all he could to make up to 230 on its own you will deprive him or her from going to university. i dont think it is wise to bribe university with money. it is some people future

When are we going to show empathy to our fellow citiens? Please let the masses/Jambites Know what to do.Because am told that it is the university senate that desides on UTME cutoff mark not JAMB. please save the live of our youths.
