About 340,000 out of the 867, 000 candidates who met the 180 cut-off point in the recent Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination will not be admitted into any of the nation’s tertiary institutions this year, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation has said.

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, told journalists on Tuesday in Kaduna, Kaduna State, that the nations’ tertiary institutions could not absorb all the candidates because of “limited spaces.”

Ojerinde, who described admission into tertiary institutions this year as a “survival of the fittest,” stated that the space available for prospective students was about 527,000.

He also disclosed that most of the candidates did not choose many of the the privately-owned universities because of high tuition.

The JAMB Registrar told journalists during the technical committee meeting on admission to degree-awarding institutions that except access to tertiary institutions was increased, “we will continue to have a lot of people waiting endlessly for admission.”

He added that the meeting, attended also by representatives of most of the higher institutions of learning in the country, was held to select the first set of candidates into the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Ojerinde explained further that the chairman and secretary of the committee would meet on the admission lists to decide whether the candidates had met the set criteria for admission or not.

He said that once the candidates had met the set criteria, the names of such candidate would be displayed on the JAMB website and those of the universities, polytechnics and COEs chosen by them.

Ojerinde said, “With this 180 cut-off point, we have about 867,000 candidates who made 180 and above, and yet the available space is just about 527,000.

“So, the remaining 340,000 candidates will have no place to go. That is the point, except access to tertiary institutions is increased; we will continue to have lots of people waiting endlessly for admission.

“One of the beauties of this UTME is that we have brought them together and we are saying that they can go to any institution. If the university doesn’t work, college of education may work; if not, polytechnics or monotechnics may work.

“But I am not saying that it is to be for everybody because the space available is still not sufficient.”

The JAMB registrar also said that some of the candidates who failed to secure admission into their preferred institutions would be distributed to schools that had fewer number of applicants.

He, however, added that the University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ahmadu Bello University, Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic had the highest number of candidates seeking admissions.

Ojerinde said, “The schools without candidates to admit are mostly private institutions, but by the time candidates discover that they don’t have any other place to go, they will go to these private institutions because it is a matter of setting your priority right.

“I can’t give the names of these institutions now; they are so many. Some of them don’t have any candidate. The Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu is one of them. Mohammed Goni College of Legal and Islamic Studies, Maiduguri has only 13 candidates.

“Admission is not automatic because the space is not sufficient. You have to try again next time if you don’t get admitted this year. It is the survival of the fittest.”

Matriculation Board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, has said that the Federal Government plans to standardize the conduct of the post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria in Bwari, Abuja on Thursday that the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa‘i, had already promised that the exercise would soon be carried out.

“It is difficult for me to say categorically what is going to take place. I’m also aware of the pronouncements by the National Assembly on the issue,” he said.

Ojerinde said that although the federal lawmakers had decried the procedure being adopted for the conduct of the post-UTME, he stated that no law had been made to cancel it.

He said, “Personally, let me say, as an individual, I’m not against the conduct of post-UTME, but I’m against the procedure.

“I’m against the extortionist process of conducting the examination. I’m also not comfortable with the unstandardised nature of the examination.

“If somebody is doing post-UTME in Maiduguri, can we use the same procedure in Lagos? If you do it at the University of Lagos, can you use it in LASU? The method should be usable all over.”

NAN reports that JAMB is expected to hold a technical session between July 13 and 15 to consider the first batch of UTME candidates for admissions into tertiary institutions.

Many candidates among the 41,188 whose results were not released are currently in agony concerning their fate. The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) said the results were withheld due to technical errors on the part of candidates or allegations of examination malpractice.

Since the results were released about three weeks ago, some candidates have found that only some of their papers where published and have been making concerted effort to find out if there is any possibility that they will eventually get to know their total scores.

I learnt from the JAMB PRO that those, whose results were seized because of errors like not shading the subject column, have no hope of ever getting them. She said the reason is that the scripts are marked by computers which do not recognized wrongly shaded answer sheets so sets them aside. As for those results being investigated for allegations of examination malpractice, candidates yet to have their complete results should pray earnestly that if they fall into this category, they are cleared of wrongdoing, if not, it is goodbye till next year.

One year is a long time to stay at home doing nothing. Unfortunately many candidates who wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), including those who had no problems accessing their results, would not gain admission into higher institutions during the next admission exercise, and spend the next year out of school. Some already know they did not pass. Some know they have passed, however, that is no guarantee that they will get into school and they will likely be very bitter about their experience.

Whatever category they fall in, I would advice that candidates who find they cannot get into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in the next academic session to invest in themselves by undergoing vocational and entrepreneurial training. It would do them no harm to learn skills that would help them to become self sustaining even before they graduate.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board on Friday released the results of 1, 228, 607 out of a total of 1, 276, 795 candidates who sat for the maiden Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) held on April 17 2010 across the country.

Of this number, only 501,463 representing 41 per cent of the candidates scored above 200 out of the maximum 400 points.

Another set of 832,434 representing 68 per cent of this number scored above 180 marks while 330, 971 representing 27 per cent scored between 180 and 199 marks.

The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. ‘Dibu Ojerinde, who disclosed these at a press briefing in Abuja, explained that a total of 1, 375,652 candidates applied for the 2010 UTME, out of which 271 candidates sat for the examination in six foreign countries.

He said, ”Out of the 1,276,795 candidates that sat for the 2010 UTME, the results of 1,228,607 representing 96.26 per cent are today released, while results of 48, 188 (3.77 per cent) are still being screened before release or otherwise.

”Detailed analysis of application by gender shows that 769,416 candidates are male while 606,236 candidates are female. These figures show that 44.07 per cent are female while 55.93 per cent are male.”

Imo State led the six states with the highest number of candidates with a total of 111,613 followed by Delta State (86,955), Anambra (83,612), Osun (74,014), Edo (70,964) and Ogun (70,905).

The Federal Capital Territory led the bottom six with a total of 2,393 applications, It was closely followed by Zamfara State (3,568), Sokoto (4754), Yobe (5463), Kebbi (6194) and Borno (8296).

As has been the tradition over the years, candidates who are seeking university admission led the pack, followed closely by those seeking admission into colleges of education.

Bayelsa State came tops on the list of states where examination malpractices were recorded. It had a total of 5,442 cases, followed by Rivers State with 3, 302 cases. Lagos State came third with 2,847 cases. Fourty six centers in Abia, Akwaibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Lagos and Rivers are also being investigated.

The JAMB registrar revealed that 46 examination centres across 10 states had been de-recognised as a result of their ”unacceptable behaviours during the examination.”
Rivers State led the pack with 12 centres, followed by Imo and Lagos states with seven centres each.
Ojerinde said 20,780 results, representing 1.63 per cent of the total number of those who sat for the examination, were being withheld for further verification and thorough screening before release.

He explained that it was too early to make public the name of the highest scorer in the examination because some of the results were still being screened.

He also frowned at the practice of some universities who charged candidates up to N10, 000 for making such universities their second choice. Ojerinde said this practice must stop or else sanctions would be applied.

He enjoined candidates to go online, using their application slips to log on to the JAMB website to check their results.

Meanwhile, the official website for checking the resul is not going.

Minister of Education

Minister of Education

Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), has concluded arrangement to effect the commencement of its new common entrance examination into tertiary institutions in the country in 2010. The new examination, which is called Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), has been slated for April 17, 2010. Last week, the board organised a sensitisation programme across the country to create awareness about the new examination.

UTME is the unification of Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) and Monotechnics, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Matriculation Examination (MPCEME) under a single matriculation examination called UTME (Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examination).

The new policy came as a result of attempts by the Federal Government and all concerned stakeholders in the education sector to solve the problems of access and the quality of entrants into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. In view of this, academic calendars and entry requirements for all tertiary institutions will be harmonised. According to JAMB, the policy was adopted to address the problem of inadequate centres and infrastructure, overstretching of existing facilities among others.

Education Tribune gathered that the minimum requirements for entry into any tertiary institution under UTME are five Ordinary Level credit passes including English Language and Mathematics where applicable. Now, candidates who do not satisfy the minimum requirements are not qualified for admission into tertiary institutions.

Alhaji Razaaq Lawal, Oyo State Zonal coordinator of the board, told Education Tribune that admissions would be sorted out in the order of preference indicated by the candidates. Once candidates have been admitted, they would not be presented for consideration in subsequent admission exercises.

‘’At the point of registration, candidates are required to make six choices of institutions as follows: two from universities; two from polytechnics; monotechnics/specialised institutions and two from colleges of education. This must be done in order of preference, beginning with the first choice (i.e. the ‘most preferred’, the ‘more preferred’ and the ‘preferred’), and all the three categories of tertiary institutions will have the same national cut-off point for admissions.

‘’Candidates are required to make their choices of institutions or courses in order of preference. All candidates will write the same examination, which is four subjects, including the Use of English, and the results of the UTME will be used for the placement of suitably qualified candidates into the three categories of tertiary institutions according to their preferences.

‘’Candidates are expected to purchase the UTME registration scratch cards from JAMB offices or authorised banks, between January and Febuary15,2010,’’he said.

However, while many welcome this development as a way of checkmating post UME others argue that it will return us to those days when students bribe their way into admission.

Do you think the introduction of UTME can solve admission problem in Nigeria?
