The University of Calabar (UNICAL) Alumni Association is planning a reunion of all graduates from the institution to encourage them contribute to the development of the institution.
The association says it will also lay the foundation for its planned Alumni Centre estimated at about N500 million.
A press release signed by Chairman of the Central Planning Committee of the Association, Mr Enie Otrofanowei statement in Calabar said the event scheduled for October 28 to 31 would be the first time the university would be receiving its former students since its establishment in 1975.
“This is the first time our alma mater will be throwing open its gate to welcome her ex-students at the national level since 1975 when the school was founded. Most chapters and sets have held one form of reunion or the other in the past but this particular reunion is very spectacular for the reasons that it is a national and more encompassing event. This is history in the making and by our estimation, a lot of members from all over Nigeria will be attending this four-day event in Calabar.”
Otrofanowei said the proposed centre would house the offices of the national executives, an e-library, amphi-theatre, restaurants, business centre and Hall of Fame.
He said a unique feature of the re-union is that members would return to their former departments and faculties for interactive sessions with their deans and heads of departments.
“The objective is to secure the buy in of all towards making each department and faculty a centre of excellenc,” he said.
He disclosed that prominent members of the association would be honoured with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Those to be honoured, according to him, include the Chief Justice of the of Gambia, Chief Justice Emmanuel Agim Akomaye; Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ita Mbaba; Chairman Ordrec Group, Dr. A.B.C. Orjiako; former Director-General, NIMASA, Mfon Usoro; Executive Secretary of Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission in the Presidency, John Kennedy Opara and the 2009 Caines Prize Winner, Prof. E.C. Osondu, among others.
