PROFESSOR Babs Aliyu Fafunwa, former Minister of Education seemed not satisfied with the state of Nigerian education as standard and quality keep falling.

Access to education, especially at tertiary levels has become so limited that parents now send their children to universities in Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo an other West African countries.

Poor funding, decay of infrastructure, lack of conducive learning and teaching environments, absence of good, well-stocked libraries, inadeanate online computer-driven libraries, laboratories without equipment, poor academic staffing, irrelevant curriculum have all combined to lower the standard of education in the country.

At an event in the University of Lagos in which the International School, University of Lagos, ISL, held its graduation and valedictory ceremony. Vanguard Education Weekly, caught up with Prof Fafunwa, who briefly bared his mind on the travails of our education system.

He believes that Nigeria’s education system should be reviewed so as to cope with the 21st Century challenges.

As at now, no Nigerian university is ranked among the first 1000 in the world. In previous years tertiary institutions like the University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Lagos, were globally acclaimed. But not so today.

Excerpts of the brief interview with Prof. Fafunwa who has been on retirement can be read by clicking the link below:

It was celebration time for the staff and students of the Part-Time Programmes (PTP) Unit of the University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD) penultimate Saturday when a new lecture hall and eight vehicles were commissioned.

The PTP structure also houses a computer centre, library, conference centre, office accommodation for the Assistant Director, Secretary, Bursary, co-ordinators and staff.

The projects were executed under the administration of the Assistant Director of UNAD-PTP, Dr. Femi Omotoso, who was commended by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dipo Kolawole, for turning around the fortunes of the unit through aggressive generation of funds and execution of projects.

Kolawole commissioned the projects which included a twin 500-seater lecture hall for part-time students, seven new Toyota Camry cars purchased for the use of officials and a 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus.

Kolawole said PTP had set a benchmark in the institution in revenue generation and using same to execute key projects for the benefit of staff and students.

The VC said the developments in PTP are in fulfilment of the vision he has for the university, which is to leave the institution better than he met it. He urged other faculties, departments and units to emulate PTP.

“You have seen for yourself tremendous developments going on in PTP and Omotoso who completed his term on July 31 has shown how to appropriate resources for the good of the university community and it is part of the revolution to make UNAD a university of repute,” he said.

The beneficiaries of the cars are the PTP Heads of Departments of Banking and Finance, Economics, Geography and Planning Sciences, History and International Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Bursary.

Omotoso, who savoured the encomiums showered on him by Kolawole enumerated on the giant strides witnessed at PTP since he assumed office in August 2008 including clearing all outstanding results since 1997 totalling 10,250; refurbishing the old PTP building and vehicles, getting full accreditation for the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and Accounting programmes among others which were financed solely by the unit.

“The projects we are commissioning today, just like the one before then, are without any financial implication for the university or the Ekiti State government. They are purely PTP self-financed projects. The building is a twin 500-seater to make the welfare of our students a priority and to key into the philosophy of TEAM UNAD. It will, no doubt, solve accommodation problem as it will complement the existing lecture halls in the university,” he said.

Omotoso said the feats achieved in PTP would not have been possible without the tremendous support and assistance received from the parent faculties – Management Sciences and Social Sciences as well as other part-time programme stakeholders.

He also attributed his success to God.

“It is an opportunity to be here and to God be the glory because it was God that has assisted me. Last year, we gave out six cars but now we are giving out six cars and a bus,” he said.

Speaking with reporters shortly after the inauguration, Prof Kolawole, clarified that part-time students are not in anyway inferior to the regular students but regretted that there are many suspected cult members doing part-time programmes.
